Travel Information
To enter Tanzania, you are required to have at least 2 blank facing pages in your passport.
- Immigration officers will need to stamp your passport upon entry and exit. If your passport does not have any blank pages, you will need to obtain a new passport, or additional pages in your passport before traveling to Tanzania.
- You’ll need a visa to travel to Tanzania, and an electronic visa is the easiest option for travelers. A Tanzanian eVisa allows you to enter the country through designted airports or land crossings and explore the country for 90 days (You can exit through any airports, land border crossings, or seaports). An eVisa is a travel document, listing your travel and personal information that you must print out and present at immigration.
- Book your Visa online via Tanzania Immigration; or
- Book your Visa online, using Sherpa.
- Or you can obtain a visa upon arrival at the airport.
- You will need $100 in cash per person for your on arrival Visa. Bills must be dated 2014 or newer, and in excellent condition – no tears, writing or crumpled, worn bills will be accepted.
The official language of Tanzania is Swahili, but English is widely spoken, particularly in tourist areas. Your guides are all fluent in English, as well as all staff in your accommodations.
The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely accepted and appreciated.
- The exchange rate of a TZS to a US$ is 1 TZS = .00042 US$.
- It is easier to use US dollars (or CAD), so you are not carrying large wads of cash!
- You can exchange currency at banks and exchange bureaus, and credit cards are accepted at most hotels and tourist establishments.
Tanzania has a tropical climate, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The best time to visit depends on the region and the activities you plan to do. The dry season from June to October is generally the best time for wildlife viewing, while the rainy season from November to May is best for birdwatching and visiting the Serengeti.
- Yellow Fever: Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for travelers arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. This includes most African countries and some South American countries. This does not included the US or Canada.
- Typhoid: Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted through contaminated food or water. It is recommended that all travelers to Tanzania receive the typhoid vaccine.
- Hepatitis A and B: Hepatitis A and B are viral infections that can be transmitted through contaminated food or water, or through contact with infected bodily fluids. The vaccines for both diseases are recommended for travelers to Tanzania.
- Malaria: Malaria is a parasitic infection that is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. It is common in Tanzania, and travelers are advised to take antimalarial medication and use mosquito repellent and bed nets to reduce their risk of infection. Malaria is not found in the areas in Tanzania in which you will be on Safari.
- Covid:Travelers entering or transiting mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar are not required to present a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or test certificate unless required by their airline, transit destination, or final destination. Health officials may screen passengers for COVID 19 symptoms on arrival or randomly select passengers for rapid antigen testing.
- Your international flights will arrive and depart from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO).
- If you have an extension in Zanzibar before or after your safari, your airport is ZNZ.
- You can depart for Zanzibar from any of these airports, depending on your safari itinerary:
- Serengeti (SEU)
- Arusha (ARK)
- Kilimanjaro (JRO)

Some of the better flight schedules from US and Canada can be found on Delta/KLM; Qatar/American Airlines; Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines.
Some offer a free stopover, including Qatar in Doha and Turkish Airlines in Istanbul.
Tanzania is a relatively safe country for travelers, but it is important to take common sense precautions such as not walking alone at night and avoiding displaying valuables in public.

- Wildlife Viewing: We follow strict guidelines when viewing wildlife, keeping a safe distance at all times and avoiding any actions that may provoke the animals.

We are contracted with Flying Doctors Tanzania to provide 24/7 emergency evacuation to a fully equipped medical facility. - Health and Hygiene:We follow all necessary health and hygiene protocols to ensure the safety of our guests and staff, including regular sanitization of vehicles and equipment.

Recommended gratuities: For hotels, lodges, camp staff and Guides, please allow this budget (In US$) per person per day:
- $2.00 – $4.00 for lodge and hotel staff – you’ll find a general tip box at each lodge, so no need to tip individually – unless you choose to
- $1.00 per bag for porters
- $10.00-$12.00 per person per day for driver-guides – you’ll be with your guide for the duration of your safari, so best to tip once at the end. That also saves you from carrying around a bunch of small bills.
