Why Tanzania Works So Well for a Family Safari

Private Safari Vehicles

Your family controls the pace, from longer wildlife sightings to earlier returns for a swim or rest.

Wildlife That Keeps Every Age Engaged

Elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras and the scale of the Serengeti make the experience immediately exciting for children and adults alike.

Family-Friendly Safari Lodges

We select stays with the room configurations, pools, meals and comfort families actually need.

Safari + Beach in One Journey

Add Zanzibar after the safari for a few slower days beside the Indian Ocean.

Time Together, Somewhere Extraordinary

Between school, work and the routines of everyday life, time together can feel surprisingly brief. A family safari in Tanzania creates room to enjoy one another’s company: watching the children follow an animal’s movements through their binoculars, sharing questions with your guide, and returning to camp with stories that belong to all of you.

At Excellent Guides, we begin with the people making the journey. Your children’s ages, the things that capture their attention and your own hopes for the holiday help shape the itinerary. With private safari vehicles, local guiding and thoughtfully selected accommodation, we bring these details together into a journey that feels personal to your family.

Whether this is your first visit to Africa or a chance to introduce your children to a place you already love, our approach is welcoming and attentive, with time to discuss the details that matter to you.

Children on Safari

Every child brings a different kind of curiosity to a safari. Some are fascinated by the largest animals; others want to know why a bird builds its nest a certain way or how a guide recognises a track. Knowing your children’s ages and interests helps us suggest a journey they can take part in and enjoy.

Age requirements differ between camps and activities. When recommending accommodation, we’ll check the policies that apply to your family and explain any restrictions in your proposal. Walking safaris and other specialist experiences need particular attention; they should only be included where the relevant age and participation requirements are met.

We’ll also discuss the rhythm of the journey. Distances between parks can mean substantial time on the road, so we’ll explain the longer travel days and consider where a different route, an additional night or an available flight might suit your family better. A private vehicle allows some flexibility, although each day still needs to work within travel distances, park rules and the arrangements booked.

Please share any dietary needs, room preferences or childcare requirements when you enquire. Meals, facilities and child-minding services vary between properties and should not be assumed to be available. These details need to be checked with the proposed camps so you can make your decision with clear expectations.

Where Your Family Stays

The right place to stay gives everyone something to look forward to after a day on safari. A comfortable room to return to, a welcoming place to share dinner, and space to enjoy the quieter moments together all become part of your family’s experience of Tanzania.

At Excellent Guides, we help you choose accommodation with your whole family in mind. Alongside the setting and level of comfort, we consider your children’s ages, preferred sleeping arrangements and how each property fits into your route. Staying somewhere beautiful should also work practically for the people travelling with you.

Room to Stay Together

You may prefer to share one family unit, or want separate bedrooms that give older children and adults a little more privacy. Tell us what feels comfortable for your family, and we’ll check the available arrangements with the properties we recommend.

Your proposal will explain the room configuration, occupancy and any age requirements. Where separate rooms are proposed, we’ll clarify whether they connect or are simply located near one another, so you know what to expect before booking.

Comfort in the Details

The small details can make a meaningful difference when travelling with children. Please let us know if you need an additional bed, particular meal arrangements or easier access around the property. We’ll check what can be accommodated and explain any limitations or additional charges.

Facilities vary between camps and lodges. If a swimming pool, reliable Wi-Fi or a particular space to relax is important to your family, we’ll take that into account when recommending your stays and confirm what is available.

Time to Enjoy Where You Are

Accommodation is part of the journey, rather than simply somewhere to sleep. We’ll discuss how to balance outings with time at your camp or lodge, while considering the distances between destinations. That might mean spending longer in one place, giving everyone time to settle in and enjoy their surroundings.

These are some of the stays we may recommend for your family. Room arrangements and facilities vary by property. Your personalised quotation will specify your proposed accommodation, subject to availability.

A LITTLE CLARITY BEFORE YOU GO

Your Family Safari Questions, Answered

Planning a family safari comes with plenty of questions. Here are a few answers to help you take the next step, from understanding the costs to knowing what happens when you get in touch.

How much does a private family safari cost?

The cost depends on your travel dates, the number of adults and children, your children’s ages, the length of your journey and the accommodation you choose. Room arrangements and travelling between destinations by road or air also influence the total.

Share an approximate budget for your whole family, even if you’re still exploring your options. We’ll use it to guide our recommendations and provide a personalised quotation with a clear breakdown of what is included and any additional costs.

Can we customise one of your suggested itineraries?

Yes. Our suggested journeys are starting points for a safari shaped around your family. You may want more time in one destination, fewer accommodation changes, different stays or experiences that reflect your children’s interests.

Tell us what appeals to you and what you would like to change. We’ll explain what works within your dates and budget, taking travel distances, availability and age requirements into account.

How much driving should we expect each day?

Driving time varies with the route and the day’s activities. A game drive from camp is different from a transfer between parks, which can involve several hours on the road. Wildlife sightings, road conditions and stops can also affect journey times.

During planning, we’ll explain the longer travel days and discuss how to balance exploring with breaks and time at camp. Where suitable flights are available, we can also compare flying with travelling by road, including the difference in cost.

When should we start planning our family safari?

It helps to begin once you have an idea of your travel dates, particularly if you are travelling during school holidays or need a specific family room arrangement. Starting early gives us more opportunity to explore accommodation and route options before you make your decision.

You don’t need to have everything worked out before contacting us. If your dates are approaching, we can check what is available and help you understand the options.

Can we combine our safari with Zanzibar?

Yes. Our Safari & beach time journey offers a starting point for combining Tanzania’s wildlife with a stay on Zanzibar. It can be a lovely way to follow days of discovery with a gentler pace beside the ocean.

We’ll help you decide how to divide your time, consider the flight and transfer connections, and recommend accommodation suited to your family. Your proposal will explain the arrangements and costs for both parts of the journey.

What is included in our quotation?

Your quotation will set out the services included in your particular itinerary, such as accommodation, the meal plan at each stay, safari transport, guiding, park fees, transfers and any included activities or domestic flights.

It will also identify exclusions and optional extras, so you can see which costs remain outside the quoted total. International flights, insurance, gratuities and personal expenses should only be treated as included where expressly stated. We’ll walk you through any details you would like clarified before you book.

What happens after we send an enquiry?

Our team will review your ideas and contact you to learn more about your family. We may ask about your children’s ages, preferred dates, interests, budget and any accommodation requirements that will help us plan thoughtfully.

From there, we’ll put together a proposed itinerary and quotation for you to consider. You can discuss adjustments with us before deciding to book. Sending an enquiry starts the conversation; it does not confirm a reservation.

What are your deposit and cancellation terms?

The deposit required, payment deadlines and cancellation charges will be set out in the booking terms supplied with your proposal. Please review these before making a payment, including any conditions attached to the accommodation or services in your itinerary.

If there is anything you would like explained, we’ll talk it through before you confirm. Should you later need to change or cancel your journey, contact us as soon as possible so we can explain the options and any applicable charges.

Still have a question about your family’s journey?

Tell us what’s on your mind. We’ll help you work through the details and explore what could suit your family.
